Merry Christmas

I can't believe that this year is already coming to an end. Last year at this time Tony & I were in The Netherlands...having tacos for our Christmas dinner. This year we are surrounded by family & friends. I feel very blessed. This year has been my real first year of running (at least my first year of running races). I'm very proud to call myself a marathoner...with 2 marathons under my belt! Along this wonderful journey I have met so many nice and wonderful friends through twitter. My online support system has been my saving grace during many hard times this year. Thanks to all of you that follow this blog and continue to give me support! I also wanted to thank my team (Team Point Two) for a wonderful year! After my wedding I jumped right in with two feet and haven't looked back. I'm so thankful that I was chosen to be a part of such a special thing. Merry Christmas to all my running friends. I hope you were like me, surrounded by family & friends!
Merry Christmas from The Bergin Family!

Las Vegas Marathon (Race Report)

Where do I start? This race report could get long and might be boring. But I really want to start from the beginning.

Tony & I flew in on Thursday night around midnight. So we didn't do much but check in and sleep.

Friday
We decided to do the Expo before all my family and Team Point Two teammates got in. Pretty overwhelming! My first marathon didn't have an Expo, just the race. I'm very glad that we got in before the huge crowds. Later that afternoon my parents and bother arrived from Nebraska. It was so nice to see them again! The last time was our wedding in Hawaii. After a nice supper at The Cheesecake Factory we met up with my teammate LJ. It was so nice to finally meet him!!! We talked like we were best friends...just picking up where we left off. At this time I voiced my one concern about the race. What am I going to wear? I brought a ton of stuff with me, everything BUT a running jacket. After about an hour of talking my family returned from gambling and were ready to head back to the MGM for bed. Good idea!

Saturday
Was my day for taking it easy. The only thing I had planned was a meeting with a Twitter friend acmedragon337 at the running Expo and taking my parents to Jersey Boys. My whole weekend was full of meeting people that I have only talked to online before. It was fun trying to pick them out of the crowd. As for acmedragon337 I turned around and instantly knew Tim ;-)It was nice to get to chat with him and meet some of his friends. He in turn got to meet my teammate LJ. At this time I gave LJ my new flip video camera. He promised to get some great shots from the marathon (which he did!). Later that night my parents and I went to Jersey Boys and my brother and husband went to the Metallica concert. As I went to bed I didn't feel very good, but was hopeful that I would feel better in the morning.

Sunday My alarm went off around 3:15 am and I was still feeling SICK! I walked to meet my mom and we headed to Starbucks to get some coffee. I then went back to my room to do my pre race "getting ready" ritual. I was so preoccupied with not feeling good (worried about getting sick on the course) and the weather (would I be too warm or cold) that I left the room feeling as if I forgot something. As we took the tram over to Mandalay Bay (where the race started) I realized what I forgot....my Garmin watch. How stupid can I be? So this just adds to the list of worries. Luckily Tony was still in the room and he ran my watch over to me. Just in the nick of time. While I was waiting for my watch to arrive, out of the thousands of runners guess who I run into.....
Tim!!!
It was so nice to see a friendly face to settle my nerves before I headed out for the race corrals. Burrrrr it was cold out. At this time I took off my sweats and jacket and kissed my family good bye and headed to find corral 5. By the time I got there everything was jammed. I was somewhere in the 6th or 7th corral (which added more stress because I wanted to try to stick with the 3:45 pace group) and ended up stared a couple minutes behind my actual corral.
THE RACE
As we were release I instantly started thinking about catching up with my pace group. I tried to keep an eye on my Garmin to make sure that I was sticking to an 8:30ish pace. At this point the course was flat flat flat and keeping this pace was easy. I knew that an incline would be coming so I tried VERY hard not to go too fast. I also tried to enjoy the strip as much as possible. I still think it was wild that the whole strip was shut down for us, really an AWESOME experience. Around mile 4 I started feeling pretty queasy and was trying to talk myself out of being sick. At mile 6 I couldn't go any longer and had to make a quick stop. After this I started praying that this would be my last stop and was thankful that I made it to the port-a-potty. And this my friends is when the wheels start slowly falling off. I was pretty shaken up over being sick and it was hard to get back into the right state of mind. When we leave the strip I know that the inclines are going to start so I get out my shuffle and hit play and listen to my favorite podcast Phedippidations. I'm hoping that Steve can get me to mile 18 where I believe the course will start going downhill (yes I was wrong). After about 1 mile I notice that my foot is starting to hurt. It is on the top of my left foot. It feels like someone has a nail and is slightly tapping on it with a hammer. I find it hurts the most when I'm going up an incline. At this time I also start thinking about my Team Point Two teammates Nicole and LJ. I wondered if I had passed them and not seen them. When I reach mile 15 is when the wheels really start coming off. I'm not feeling good, and my foot is throbbing with each step. I'm going up hill and I can see the other runners at mile 22 flying down the hill to the finish. So I convince myself that the inclines will all be over at 18. I get myself to mile 16 which seems to flatten out and I start thinking, yep this is it flat and then downhill. I even start feeling better, I have my 4th GU and then the most terrible thing happens...we turn the corner and MORE incline. I can see in the distance the turn around point and its a long way away. Here is where the tears start coming and the fatigue is back. At mile 17 I can't hear Steve anymore because I'm praying over and over. Please let me see LJ, please let me see LJ, please let me see LJ. Around mile 23 my prayers were answered. For a split second I glanced up and saw a HUGE sign that said Team Point Two (that's all that I saw, I hope Nicole took a picture of her masterpiece!). I first see Nicole and think I LOVE HER she made me a sign, I then see LJ....I grab him and mumble something and finally spitout RUN WITH ME. I don't really remember the last 3.2 miles of the race. I just let LJ talk me through the tough parts. The one thing I do remember at the very end was seeing the 4:00 pacer run to my right. LJ said "your not going to let him pass you are you?" I decided I couldn't have that, so I pulled out my rockets and sprinted to the end...and finished in FRONT of the 4:00 pacer. Too bad that he started behind me! Do you see him behind me with his little sign? I officially crossed the finish line in 4:04:12. Here is some of the video that LJ got of me at the finish. I was so lucky that he was there to help me through the toughest part of my marathon. Thanks LJ!!!!

I will end my race report here. At the moment I am putting together a video that I will post as soon as I have it edited. Thank you to all my Team Point Two teammates, my friends and family who supported me through this whole training period. BUT especially my parents and brother who made the trip to Las Vegas, my husband who took great care of me throughout my training and LAST but not least....John Ellis, my coach, my hero, my friend! We've had many highs and lows since May, but without you John I would have never ran this marathon. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for always believing in me!

NOT my race report

Just wanted to post a quick update. We just got back to Fredericton after our weekend vacation to Las Vegas. I am looking forward to posting my race report from the Las Vegas Marathon. BUT I have been gone for almost a week and have a ton of homework and emails that I have to get done first. I will mention that I ran into a few minor problems during the race, but had two of my wonderful Team Point Two teammates there to help me through my race. I will also be writing a section about all the wonderful people that help me along the way. I am truly blessed to have such wonderful friends and family! So I will end this and get back to my homework. You can look forward to a video that I will be putting together too ;-)

BIG 20 MILER

I just finished my 6 miles today feeling a little bummed. I feel like I'm falling apart at the seems. My hamstring injury finally got better and then the pain seemed to move into my butt, then to my lower back. I just want to make it to Vegas healthy! Tomorrow is a big run for me....20 miles. The farthest distance that I've ever done in marathon training. When I was training for my first marathon the farthest distance that I got was 16 miles. Last week I ran into major problems during my Sunday long run. I was dehydrated and started cramping and had to call it quits after mile 9.

So that following Monday I decided to give up coffee until after the Vegas Marathon. Holy cow! I never thought it was going to be that hard. I think it took me all week to get rid of those caffeine headaches. Can you tell I was addicted??? I have been replacing all that coffee with water. I'm feeling much better! Tomorrow I'm going to be practicing my nutritional intake for the marathon. John has me running for 1 hour then walking 5 minutes REPEAT until 20 miles. I will post an update tomorrow after I run. Now I'm off to bed.
See you on the road!

busy at school...

I have been back at school for 4 weeks now. I'm still trying to figure out how to get everything done in one day. I wish there were more hours in the day! So far I'm having a great time in school. I get to be creative and I have also found a way to show my love for running at the same time. A few examples are these recent book covers that I had to design (I was pretending I was writing about my life). Can you pick which one was the overall winner?

I also talked my Art teacher into assigning the designing of the Team Point Two logo. Here's what I made.

Final example is probably my favorite. For my Video Production class I'm writing and shooting my own running commercial. I'm taking my favorite running quotes "my Sunday mornings aren't for sleeping in" and "my holidays aren't for taking it easy" and making a commercial. I will post it as soon as I'm finished. So these are the main reasons why I haven't been posting as much as I should. BUT I'm finally getting into the swing of things, and should be posting more.
See you on the road!

Running with George

I finally had the chance to put all my pictures together from the Oct 10-11 weekend. At the very last minute I turned the World Wide Festival of Races into an additional race that is dear to my heart. Almost a year ago our friend George passed away and I saw it as a perfect opportunity to honor his memory. Here are some of the pictures from that weekend. We had runners from New Zealand,Italy, the US, Canada, and Kuwait (just to name a few). My friend who is serving over seas didn't have a camera to take his picture but he sent along this message:
"Even though I run almost every day, this run was great and gave me an opportunity to reflect on the important people in my life as well as this past year. Believe it or not, but the 10k fell on my 365th day of this deployment....pretty awesome timing for thoughts and reflection."

Thanks to all of my friends who took part in the Running with George event! It really meant the world to me and George's family! Please enjoy the pictures!

Fall starts and I'm feeling better

For almost two weeks now I have been dealing with hamstring pain. In both high school and college I was pledged with bad hamstrings (I've suffered both strains and a severe grade 2 tear). So I have been very cautious about my running these last few weeks. Which in turn has put me a little down in the dumps. I have been having a hard time trying to motivate myself to get out for my runs. Today in fact, Tony had to physically take me outside. He promised that I would feel better after it was over (of course he was right).

This is my first fall in New Brunswick. Today on my run I really got to take full advantage of viewing the beautiful changing leaves. I had one of those moments where I could just be thankful for the opportunity to be out running. Friday has to be my favorite day for running. Everyone is busy getting home...getting ready for their weekend. It was so quiet and peaceful tonight. Ah...smile. I'm just so happy!

On my way home I grabbed some of the beautiful leaves (so I could give you a teaser). Tomorrow I'm going to try and get out and take some pictures. So you can see just how lucky I am!
Tonight above all, I'm so very thankful for my teammates. They lift me up when I need it the most! Thank you TEAM POINT TWO! Sending my love, Jamie

Terry Fox Run Update

It has been over a week since I ran my first 10K race. Now I wouldn't really call this a race (we didn't have race numbers or chips), it was technically a "fun" run. All the same I was still nervous. The race took place on the trails in Fredericton that I usually do all my training on. It was good because I knew what to expect. This was probably the hardest race I have ever done. It pretty much felt like I was sprinting the whole thing! I felt out of shape and ready to cry. At mile 6 I wanted to quit...but dug in an finished hard (ha ha the last .2). Although I had a really great race it was overshadowed by my right hamstring. Early in the week I tweaked it and didn't email John because I didn't have internet. So I continued with the planned workouts and ran the race without him knowing. Needless to say I don't think the race helped the hamstring out any. Overall, it was a good experience. BUT the next 10K race I do will definitely be a road race.

The Terry Fox Run

"And almost 30 years later, Canadians adopted Terry’s mission of finding a cure for all cancers with an enthusiasm and passion that has done him proud. In keeping with the approach of its founder, The Terry Fox Run (1981 - ) is an innovative and volunteer-led event, all-inclusive, non-competitive, with no corporate sponsorship, incentives or fundraising minimums.

It has become a fall tradition in Canada to gather your friends and family, lace on your shoes, bring our pledge sheets and attend your favourite Terry Fox Run site, where Organizers have no budget for expenses but have unlimited appreciation for your attendance!

The Annual Run in Canada is usually hosted on the second Sunday after Labour Day, the month chosen by Terry to reflect when he had to stop running and when Canadians had to start."
Taken from Terry Fox Foundation http://www.terryfox.org

This year I will be participating in The Terry Fox Run held in Fredericton, NB. I will be running with my family in a group named "Family Ties." I'm so honored to be a part of such a special thing!

Nervous

I am starting to get a little nervous about my marathon in December. Since it’s my second marathon I know a little more about what to expect. But now I have the PR looming over head. Many many "what ifs" running around in my head. I'm thankful to have my teammates from Team Point Two around to help with motivation and inspiration!
I'm also missing the Netherlands. Normally around the end of August we are moving back to Europe for hockey. This year we will not be going back. I did find out on Monday that I got accepted into an 18 month program for Graphic and Digital Media Design. I'm really excited to go back to school and am thankful that I will be staying in my husband's home town. Lots of new things to look forward to.
Now I'm just trying to find a cheap flight home to Nebraska (for a quick visit) before school starts in October.

Sunday Long Run

We had such a great time doing our photo shoot and got so many great shots...I just wish I could post them all! So instead I think I will just add a new picture to every new post that I write.
I finished up this week with just a hair over 50 miles. Today was my first long run over 11 miles (the longest I've run during this training program). I had specific instructions to run 8:30 paces for a minute (during the odd miles, starting at mile 3) and two minutes (during the even miles, starting at mile 4)during my 13 mile run today. I felt really good for the first part of my run. I then hit some of the hill sections during miles 7 & 8. As luck would have it both pick-ups landed right at the bottom of hills. I think this pretty much wore out my legs and I started having problems for the last few miles.
I felt pretty terrible about it. I feel like one of my "strengths" is finishing strong. After beating myself up about it, I realized that I had a pretty tough couple of weeks. The heat out here has been hot hot hot well in the 90's and 100's. That coupled with the not having an air conditioner (which equals no sleep). I have been running either early in the mornings or late at night to try to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Honestly it just didn't want to cool off! So I changed my mind... I totally kicked butt! I'm actually looking forward to next week. If I can run during this hot spell, it's only going to get better and COOLER ;-)
I also wanted to thank all of you who read this. I'm going to try to be better at posting. I have been doing the running thing alone for so long. It seems as if I've gotten to be a little shy. That and living in France and the Netherlands and not speaking the native language made me super shy with people. I really want to thank you for listening because I have been pretty lonely these last few years. It's so nice to have friends that understand my running!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

Sneak Peak...

Here is a sneak peak from our photo shoot Wednesday night. I wanted some new pictures for the blog, and because I just got married I wanted to do something in my wedding dress. So Stacey, Shawna (my sisters-in-law) and I got all dolled up and got some really great shots!

They are here!

Finally my new shoes arrive! During yesterday's 11 mile run I really noticed how bad my shoes were. I'm so excited to take my new shoes out for a run!

Today has been super hot AGAIN! It's 90...but feels like 103, super duper! This is my actual first summer training for a race. It's HARD! Lately I have been trying to keep myself motivated with listening to as many new podcasts as possible. It's so great because we are all training in this same hot heat.

One of my favorite runners is Dirt Dawg he just ran a 100 mile race (The Burning River 100) on August 1.
The Burning River 100 is an exciting 100 mile run held in Northeast Ohio that travels through several of the region’s most scenic areas, including the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the Cleveland Metroparks and the Metro Parks, serving Summit County.
What a great inspiration for all of us! If you haven't heard his podcast you should check it out.

As for me I have another big week of 51 miles and nothing but sun and heat in the forecast. But I do have my new shoes!!! I hope you have a good week.
See you on the road!

Darn you....Camelbak

Well...
Yesterdays run didn't go as well as I hoped. We had plans for dinner with our friends, so I headed out around 5:00pm. I decided to take my camelbak out with me because I could carry more water without have to carry bottles in my hands. I did my first two miles at a good pace (a little faster then the 9:30 pace). Felt good! Started my 5 x 1 min pick-ups (7:24 pace) followed by 4 mins (9:30 pace). Felt good! After finishing I was to run at a 9:30 and then finish up the last 2 miles at a 8:00 pace. I was hot! So I took some water from my camelbak. I first spit out the first 5 drinks hoping to get some colder water. Took at BIG drink...it didn't taste very good. Shortly my stomach started cramping up. I was about 2 miles away from home. So I did the death shuffle home. Ended up getting sick. It was the first time I've ever gotten sick running. I don't think that it was the heat...I'm assuming it was the water. I guess I didn't get it cleaned out properly. Today it is raining, so I don't have to worry about the heat. I will probably pass on the camelbak today (ha).

My question to you is:
What do you use for hydration on long runs? Carry bottles? Wear a hydration belt? Camelbak? I'm looking for some new ideas...because I've got more miles coming my way. Thanks for your help!
SEE YOU ON THE ROAD,

OH NO...Thursday Workout

Here is my running assignment from Cap'n John Ellis

Thursday: 9 miles. After 2 miles, run 5 x 1 minute pickups at apx. 7:25/mile pace (just for that minute) and return to 9:30/pace for 4 minutes before starting the next rep. 5 total pickups. Run 8:00/ mile for the last 2 miles.
Since it's going to be a harder workout I'm waiting until tonight to attempt this workout. Hopefully it will be a little cooler. I will post later and let you know how tonight went and the challeges I came across. Hope you are having a great day! See you on the road, J

Kicking It In Blackville

At the begining of this week Tony & I spent a few day in Blackville, NB. Yesterday we spent the morning building a driveway "grader" for Tony's brother Terry. As you can see we are very talented, here is a picture of the finished project. It will be attached to the back of a tractor...and will turn the driveway as smooth as glass.

After we finished our project we headed out for a float on the Mirimachi. We were so lucky to have wonderful weather. What a great little break! Tony even caught me a salmon.

I'm looking forward to a great week of running!

Be Thankful

Be Thankful
An Inspirational Poem

By Author Unknown

Be thankful that you don't already have everything you desire.
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?
Be thankful when you don't know something,
for it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.
Be thankful for your limitations,
because they give you opportunities for improvement.
Be thankful for each new challenge,
because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valuable lessons.
Be thankful when you're tired and weary,
because it means you've made a difference.

It's easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who
are also thankful for the setbacks.
Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles,
and they can become your blessings.

Hike on the Kalalau Trail

As I promised...here are some pictures from our hike in Kauai. Yes I wore my Garmin, wanted to keep up on our milage. We had a great hike and really really look forward to going back. We only hiked the first two miles, just to Hanakapi'ai Beach and back. But as you can tell from the pictures the views were AMAZING!

Na Pali Coast, the most famous 11 mile hike. We only did 4 miles...but we plan on making the trip back and doing the whole thing. It was AMAZING!

Hanakapi'ai Beach (the first beach on the Kalalau Trail)

a beautiful beach after a strenuous 2 mile hike

Jamie watching the surfers

a peek at the beach from the trail down

a beautiful view of the Na Pali Coast

coming back down

another beautiful view

a view of Ke'e Beach

that's just a TRIP/FALL waiting to happen

Base Training Week 1

M: one hour easy running
Update: Was helping Tony's mother at work today so couldn't run until tonight. I felt really dehydrated during my run today. Tomorrow I'm going to try to drink a little more water. I'm also going to try and do my run in the morning...as long as it's not a total downpour. Looks like Thursday will bring us some sun...fingers crossed. Day 1 feeling pretty good!

Update: Just got back from my out and back. It was a beautiful day so I decided to run the trails from Marysville into downtown Fredericton. It was a beautiful run! Hot! But I really enjoyed being out in the sun and fresh air. I was a little dehydrated on the last 8 minutes of my run...and it all seemed to be uphill ;-) funny how that works. Today I get to spend the day at my sister-in-laws pool! Felt really GOOD today!

Rainy Sunday

Today I went out for a 10 miler. Tony and I had it all figured out...I would run 6 miles and then meet him on the trail in Marysville to finish the last 4 together. As I was on mile 4 it started raining. Not just a little sprinkle, but a full out DOWNPOUR. As I ran the rain poured down my face so hard that my contacts were having trouble staying put. I was praying that any minute Tony would show up to pick me up. Right at mile 5 he came. I was never so happy! I know in this picture you can't tell that I'm soaked...but here was my proof.

We waited a little for the rain to stop and finished almost all of the 5 miles I had left. Now as I look out the window it is bright and sunny. Something I haven't seen since I arrived last Monday. We have been getting rain everyday with temps in the 60s. Well I better wrap this up I have a call on TalkShoe with my teammates!
