We just got back to Fredericton after our weekend vacation to Las Vegas. I am looking forward to posting my race report from the Las Vegas Marathon. BUT I have been gone for almost a week and have a ton of homework and emails that I have to get done first. I will mention that I ran into a few minor problems during the race, but had two of my wonderful Team Point Two teammates there to help me through my race. I will also be writing a section about all the wonderful people that help me along the way. I am truly blessed to have such wonderful friends and family! So I will end this and get back to my homework. You can look forward to a video that I will be putting together too ;-)

BIG 20 MILER

I just finished my 6 miles today feeling a little bummed. I feel like I'm falling apart at the seems. My hamstring injury finally got better and then the pain seemed to move into my butt, then to my lower back. I just want to make it to Vegas healthy! Tomorrow is a big run for me....20 miles. The farthest distance that I've ever done in marathon training. When I was training for my first marathon the farthest distance that I got was 16 miles. Last week I ran into major problems during my Sunday long run. I was dehydrated and started cramping and had to call it quits after mile 9.

So that following Monday I decided to give up coffee until after the Vegas Marathon. Holy cow! I never thought it was going to be that hard. I think it took me all week to get rid of those caffeine headaches. Can you tell I was addicted??? I have been replacing all that coffee with water. I'm feeling much better! Tomorrow I'm going to be practicing my nutritional intake for the marathon. John has me running for 1 hour then walking 5 minutes REPEAT until 20 miles. I will post an update tomorrow after I run. Now I'm off to bed.
See you on the road!
lucky7runner

Las Vegas Marathon Route

Rock 'N Roll Las Vegas Marathon 2009
Find more Runs in Las Vegas, Nevada

busy at school...

I have been back at school for 4 weeks now. I'm still trying to figure out how to get everything done in one day. I wish there were more hours in the day! So far I'm having a great time in school. I get to be creative and I have also found a way to show my love for running at the same time. A few examples are these recent book covers that I had to design (I was pretending I was writing about my life). Can you pick which one was the overall winner?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hfC5pmDruJY/Sujspy_8a_I/AAAAAAAADfM/hKHGu0VfWCk/s400/Assignment2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397824356212304882" />
I also talked my Art teacher into assigning the designing of the Team Point Two logo. Here's what I made.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 286px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hfC5pmDruJY/SujspqsRRTI/AAAAAAAADfE/b_JXWmbpNrg/s400/teampointtwo(2)+copy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397824353982301490" />
Final example is probably my favorite. For my Video Production class I'm writing and shooting my own running commercial. I'm taking my favorite running quotes "my Sunday mornings aren't for sleeping in" and "my holidays aren't for taking it easy" and making a commercial. I will post it as soon as I'm finished. So these are the main reasons why I haven't been posting as much as I should. BUT I'm finally getting into the swing of things, and should be posting more.
See you on the road!
lucky7runner

Running with George

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 172px; height: 230px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hfC5pmDruJY/SuYm2cBBmqI/AAAAAAAADe8/YN_uwku6RCU/s320/n1385180877_109433_7216.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397043920125401762" />
I finally had the chance to put all my pictures together from the Oct 10-11 weekend. At the very last minute I turned the World Wide Festival of Races into an additional race that is dear to my heart. Almost a year ago our friend George passed away and I saw it as a perfect opportunity to honor his memory. Here are some of the pictures from that weekend. We had runners from New Zealand,Italy, the US, Canada, and Kuwait (just to name a few). My friend who is serving over seas didn't have a camera to take his picture but he sent along this message:
"Even though I run almost every day, this run was great and gave me an opportunity to reflect on the important people in my life as well as this past year. Believe it or not, but the 10k fell on my 365th day of this deployment....pretty awesome timing for thoughts and reflection."

Thanks to all of my friends who took part in the Running with George event! It really meant the world to me and George's family! Please enjoy the pictures!

THE WORLD WIDE FESTIVAL OF RACES

On the weekend of 10-11 October 2009 runners from around the world will 'virtually' come together to celebrate their passion for the sport they love by running The Worldwide Festival of Races Half Marathon, 10K and 5K distances.
Are you registered? In both high school and college I was pledged with bad hamstrings (I've suffered both strains and a severe grade 2 tear). So I have been very cautious about my running these last few weeks. Which in turn has put me a little down in the dumps. I have been having a hard time trying to motivate myself to get out for my runs. Today in fact, Tony had to physically take me outside. He promised that I would feel better after it was over (of course he was right).
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hfC5pmDruJY/Sr1qj66XwpI/AAAAAAAADcQ/HHzRwNbl9ZA/s400/IMG_6172%5B1%5D" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385577894747030162" />
This is my first fall in New Brunswick. Today on my run I really got to take full advantage of viewing the beautiful changing leaves. I had one of those moments where I could just be thankful for the opportunity to be out running. Friday has to be my favorite day for running. Everyone is busy getting home...getting ready for their weekend. It was so quiet and peaceful tonight. Ah...smile. I'm just so happy!
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hfC5pmDruJY/Sr1qkMRY4NI/AAAAAAAADcY/Sn2mWkVlO3I/s400/IMG_6178%5B1%5D" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385577899406975186" />
On my way home I grabbed some of the beautiful leaves (so I could give you a teaser). Tomorrow I'm going to try and get out and take some pictures. So you can see just how lucky I am!
Tonight above all, I'm so very thankful for my teammates. They lift me up when I need it the most! Thank you TEAM POINT TWO! Now I wouldn't really call this a race (we didn't have race numbers or chips), it was technically a "fun" run. All the same I was still nervous. The race took place on the trails in Fredericton that I usually do all my training on. It was good because I knew what to expect. This was probably the hardest race I have ever done. It pretty much felt like I was sprinting the whole thing! I felt out of shape and ready to cry. At mile 6 I wanted to quit...but dug in an finished hard (ha ha the last .2). Although I had a really great race it was overshadowed by my right hamstring. Early in the week I tweaked it and didn't email John because I didn't have internet. So I continued with the planned workouts and ran the race without him knowing. Needless to say I don't think the race helped the hamstring out any. Overall, it was a good experience. BUT the next 10K race I do will definitely be a road race.

The Terry Fox Run

"And almost 30 years later, Canadians adopted Terry’s mission of finding a cure for all cancers with an enthusiasm and passion that has done him proud. Since it’s my second marathon I know a little more about what to expect. But now I have the PR looming over head. Many many "what ifs" running around in my head. I'm thankful to have my teammates from Team Point Two around to help with motivation and inspiration!
I'm also missing the Netherlands. Normally around the end of August we are moving back to Europe for hockey. This year we will not be going back. I did find out on Monday that I got accepted into an 18 month program for Graphic and Digital Media Design. I'm really excited to go back to school and am thankful that I will be staying in my husband's home town. Lots of new things to look forward to.
Now I'm just trying to find a cheap flight home to Nebraska (for a quick visit) before school starts in October.

August Running Summary

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hfC5pmDruJY/Sp0Wjzhs4fI/AAAAAAAADao/VPl9lMdIMlE/s400/IMG_2039.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376478334533034482" />
Runs: 26
Avg. So instead I think I will just add a new picture to every new post that I write.
I finished up this week with just a hair over 50 miles. Today was my first long run over 11 miles (the longest I've run during this training program). I had specific instructions to run 8:30 paces for a minute (during the odd miles, starting at mile 3) and two minutes (during the even miles, starting at mile 4)during my 13 mile run today. I felt really good for the first part of my run. I then hit some of the hill sections during miles 7 & 8. As luck would have it both pick-ups landed right at the bottom of hills. I think this pretty much wore out my legs and I started having problems for the last few miles.
I felt pretty terrible about it. I feel like one of my "strengths" is finishing strong. After beating myself up about it, I realized that I had a pretty tough couple of weeks. The heat out here has been hot hot hot well in the 90's and 100's. That coupled with the not having an air conditioner (which equals no sleep). I have been running either early in the mornings or late at night to try to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Honestly it just didn't want to cool off! So I changed my mind... I totally kicked butt! I'm actually looking forward to next week. If I can run during this hot spell, it's only going to get better and COOLER ;-)
I also wanted to thank all of you who read this. I'm going to try to be better at posting. I have been doing the running thing alone for so long. It seems as if I've gotten to be a little shy. That and living in France and the Netherlands and not speaking the native language made me super shy with people. I really want to thank you for listening because I have been pretty lonely these last few years. It's so nice to have friends that understand my running!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
lucky7runner

Sneak Peak...

Here is a sneak peak from our photo shoot Wednesday night. It's 90...but feels like 103, super duper! This is my actual first summer training for a race. It's HARD! Lately I have been trying to keep myself motivated with listening to as many new podcasts as possible. It's so great because we are all training in this same hot heat.

One of my favorite runners is Dirt Dawg he just ran a 100 mile race (The Burning River 100) on August 1.
The Burning River 100 is an exciting 100 mile run held in Northeast Ohio that travels through several of the region’s most scenic areas, including the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the Cleveland Metroparks and the Metro Parks, serving Summit County.
What a great inspiration for all of us! If you haven't heard his podcast you should check it out.

As for me I have another big week of 51 miles and nothing but sun and heat in the forecast. But I do have my new shoes!!! I hope you have a good week.
See you on the road!
lucky7runner

17 Weeks to Vegas

M: 7 miles super easy -- I mean it! 10 minute miles!! We had plans for dinner with our friends, so I headed out around 5:00pm. I decided to take my camelbak out with me because I could carry more water without have to carry bottles in my hands. I did my first two miles at a good pace (a little faster then the 9:30 pace). Felt good! Started my 5 x 1 min pick-ups (7:24 pace) followed by 4 mins (9:30 pace). Felt good! After finishing I was to run at a 9:30 and then finish up the last 2 miles at a 8:00 pace. I was hot! So I took some water from my camelbak. I first spit out the first 5 drinks hoping to get some colder water. Took at BIG drink...it didn't taste very good. Shortly my stomach started cramping up. I was about 2 miles away from home. So I did the death shuffle home. Ended up getting sick. It was the first time I've ever gotten sick running. I don't think that it was the heat...I'm assuming it was the water. I guess I didn't get it cleaned out properly. Today it is raining, so I don't have to worry about the heat. I will probably pass on the camelbak today (ha).

My question to you is:
What do you use for hydration on long runs? Carry bottles? Wear a hydration belt? Camelbak? I'm looking for some new ideas...because I've got more miles coming my way. See you on the road, J

Kicking It In Blackville

At the begining of this week Tony & I spent a few day in Blackville, NB. Yesterday we spent the morning building a driveway "grader" for Tony's brother Terry. As you can see we are very talented, here is a picture of the finished project. It will be attached to the back of a tractor...and will turn the driveway as smooth as glass.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hfC5pmDruJY/Smd6ma0YlwI/AAAAAAAADWM/ZMksqZEs8Sk/s400/IMG_5982.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361388681860519682" />
After we finished our project we headed out for a float on the Mirimachi. We were so lucky to have wonderful weather. What a great little break! Tony even caught me a salmon.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hfC5pmDruJY/Smd6muVMsJI/AAAAAAAADWU/uQzw0iS7p-U/s400/IMG_5985.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361388687098425490" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hfC5pmDruJY/Smd6m1ME07I/AAAAAAAADWc/uO0TdxC290o/s400/IMG_5991.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361388688939209650" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hfC5pmDruJY/Smd6nX4xXTI/AAAAAAAADWk/86JvfhYFNtI/s400/IMG_6001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361388698253483314" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hfC5pmDruJY/Smd6njnKuOI/AAAAAAAADWs/KgTBWI2PBcs/s400/IMG_6002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361388701400873186" />
I'm looking forward to a great week of running!

Be Thankful

Be Thankful
An Inspirational Poem

By Author Unknown

Be thankful that you don't already have everything you desire.
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?
Be thankful when you don't know something,
for it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.
Be thankful for your limitations,
because they give you opportunities for improvement.
Be thankful for each new challenge,
because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes.
